PSHE

PSHE/RSE Curriculum

PSHE encompasses all areas designed to promote children’s Personal, Social and Health Development. It gives children the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to stay healthy and safe; develop worthwhile relationships; understand and respect differences; develop independence and responsibility and make the most of their own abilities and those of others.

At Barcroft, we deliver a broad, balanced and engaging PSHE and RSE curriculum, using the SCARF scheme of work from Years 1 - 6. This scheme of work is based around six units of work: Roles and Respect, Keeping Myself Safe, Me and My Relationships, Valuing Differences, Being my Best and Growing and Changing. Each year group will cover the same theme, at the same time, during the year; building upon their prior knowledge from previous years.

At Barcroft Academy, the children are also exposed to many special events that happen throughout the year! These ‘Special Days’ include for Jeans for Genes day, Bonfire and Firework Safety, Armistice Day, Anti-Bullying Week, Children in Need, Chinese New Year, Safer Internet Day, Children’s Mental Health Week, Fairtrade Fortnight, Autism Awareness Week, St. Andrew’s Day, St. George’s Day, St. David’s Day, Comic Relief/Sport Relief, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, World Book Day and many others.

In Early Years, the most relevant statements for PSHE are taken from the following areas of learning: Communication and Language; Personal, Social and Emotional Development; Physical Development and Understanding the World. The children access the subject through their play and through adult led activities for a range of topics across the year, as well as in weekly circle time discussions.

What is RSE?

RSE stands for “Relationships and Sex Education” and as part of Relationships and Health Education, is a new approach to teaching children about relationships and health.

Is RSE compulsory?

The Relationships Education, RSE, and Health Education (England) Regulations 2019 have made Relationships Education compulsory in all primary schools.

All primary school children will be required to learn about relationships and health. Relationships and Health Education comprises two distinct areas:

  • Relationships
  • Physical Health and Mental Wellbeing

When is RSE taught?

At our school, Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) is taught in an age-appropriate way throughout primary school as part of our Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education curriculum. Children learn about friendships, families, respect, kindness, staying safe, and how to build positive relationships. As pupils move through the school, learning is carefully planned to reflect their age and stage of development, helping them to understand changes as they grow and preparing them for life in modern Britain. Parents and carers are kept informed about the curriculum, and all teaching follows statutory guidance from the Department for Education.
